Carol Wirkus, Friends of the Forest vice
president and publicity chairwoman,
appears Wednesday in the Sedona Red
Rock News.
Coconino National Forest. We recognized
the successes of the past year, elected new
directors for the coming year, and honored
volunteers.
"Have you ever been busy! Thank you
for your time, energy and passion. You are
our boots on the ground and a constant
presence out there for the Forest
Service," exclaimed District Ranger
Heather Provencio.
During the past year, the Friends
donated a record 26,000 hours,
assisting the Red Rock Ranger
District in a wide variety of proj-
ects. "This is another good year
that breaks all previous records
-- give yourselves a hand," said
Bill Kusner, the Friends database
manager. According t6 Provencio,
this is the equivalent of 13 full-
time employees, which consider-
ably lightens the load for disgict
staff members.
Each year about one-third of
the board of directors are elected
to serve a three-year term. This
year the nominees for the 13 open
director positions were introduced
by President Roy Julian and then
elected Rick Baldauf, A1 Cornell,
A1 Gilson, Spence Gustav, Mike Haboush,
Kevin Harding, Chuck Jenkins, Joe
Landholm, Jan Lisowski, Buck Packard,
Darl Rector, Gene Rector and Craig
Stevens.
The highlight of the annual meeting is the
opportunity to recognize the accomplish-
ments of the many volunteers who give so
generously of their time. Julian awarded 11
plaques to key members.
Gene Rector was named Distinguished
Volunteer of the Year for his 15 years of
hard work and tireless dedication to the
forest, where he has led "Hotshot" crews
to maintain wilderness trails, clearing
The City of Sedona is
seeking a volunteer to serve
a one-year term on a newly
formed Budget Oversight
Commission. The commission
will help the city in preparing
the five-year capital plan and
annual budget. The commis-
sion is solely advisory to the
council but will play a key
role in providing important
public input on budget policy,
including revenue recom-
mendations, capital planning
processes and prioritization for
continuation or elimination of
programming and services in
order to maintain a balanced
budget.
The commission meets regu-
larly to review information and
provide feedback concurrent
with the budget calendar in
order to meet key deadlines
needed to assist council with
formulation of the annual
budget.

this commission opening must
be Sedona residents, or own a
business within the corporate
limits of the city of Sedona.

the third Wednesday of each
month, November through

a staff liaison to review budget
conditions such as:

cial reports and revenue and
expenditure projections.
Advise on situations of
budget exceptions including,
but not limited to, shortfalls
and/or overages in revenue
expenditures.
Review council priori-
ties and recommend capital
and operating funding levels
in accordance with-those
priorities.
Advise on possible new
revenues, fees and taxes as
needed.
Take information learned
in the meetings back into the
community, and bring ques-
tions/concerns from commu-
nity members to Budget
Oversight Commission meet-
ings for discussion.

outreach activities as arranged
by staff.
