RON MAASSEN stands in the doorway of the apple packing shed at the Sedona Heritage Museum on
Oct. 27. Maassen and other veterans will participate in the annual veterans luncheon there on Veterans
Day, Thursday, Nov. 11.

LARSON NEWSPAPERS
When Ron Maassen arrived
in Sedona almost eight years
ago, he was surprised there
was no Veterans Day celebra-
tion, so he created one.
"Just before I moved here,
my dad died. He was a World
War II vet. I'm a Vietnam vet.
I eventually met a couple of
World War II vets here and
talked with them, and decided
to do some talks about their
experience so others could hear
it," Maassen said.
Then 10 to 12 weeks of
having the veterans talk ended
up culminating in a Veterans
Appreciation Luncheon
celebration. This will be
the seventh luncheon at the
Sedona Heritage Museum for
all Sedona and Verde Valley
veterans and those currently
serving. It will be served, of
course, at 11 a.m. Thursday,
Nov. 11, the traditional day
and time for Veterans Day
celebrations.
The tradition began with
the signing of the Armistice
'!after World War I,' which was
signed between the Allies
and Germany at Compi6gne,
France, for the cessation of
hostilities on the Western
Front the .1 lth hour of the 1 lth
day of the l lth month:
Nov. ll, 1918.
The date was declared a
national holiday in many
Allied nations to commemo-
rate and honor those in the
armed forces who were killed
during war. The day is still
celebrated every, year not only
for those who were killed,
but for those still living who
served.
"Fortunately, we at the
museum have taped all of the
stories of the veterans we have
been able to contact. We'd like
to have others in Sedona and
the Verde Valley we ha cen't
talked with call us so we can
record their stories," Maassen
said. He is a volunteer at the
museum.
Boy Scout Troop 48 will be
the color guard at the luncheon.
Speakers will include Sedona
Mayor Rob Adams, Yavapai
County District 3 Supervisor
Chip Davis and Coconino
County District 3 Supervisor
and former U.S. Marine Matt
Ryam Maassen said.
"So far, we'll have everybody
represented at the luncheon
except the Coast Guard.
Not too many of those" vets
live around here," Maassen
said.
The branches of the service
are the U.S. Army, the U.S.
Navy, the U.S. Air Force,
the U.S. Coast Guard and the
U.S. Marine Corps, Which*
celebrates its 235th birthday
this year on Wednesday, Nov.
10. The U.S. Navy came into"
being Oct. 15, !775; the U.S.
Army originated June 14,
1775, as the Contifiental Army;
the U.S. Coast Guard began
as the Revenue Cutter Service
on Aug. 4, 1790, and adopted
its present name in 1915. The
youngest of the branches, the
U.S. Air Force began Sept. 8,
1947.
Maassen and the people
helping him organize the
celebration invited all area
veterans of all branches of
the service and their fami-
lies. There is room for about
120 people in the apple
packing shed.
"It'll be a light lunch
Veterans, Appreciation
Luncheon
When: Thursday, Nov. 11, 11
a.m.
Where: Sedona Heritage
Museum, 735 Jordan Road,
Apple Packing Shed
--just something to honor
and thank our veterans. We'll
also commemorate and read
the names of our veterans
who have died during the past
year. We have three this year,"
Maassen said.
One of the decorations will
be a 48-star flag. From 1912
and on through World War
I, World War II, the Korean
War and the early years of the
Vietnam War, Arizona was
the last state -- the 48th to
join the union, completing the
48 contiguous states. Alaska
and Hawaii became states on
Jan. 3 and Aug. 21, 1959,
respectively. For 47 years,
Arizona held the position as
the final state.
The flag was donated b3, Les
and Sally Peck. He was one of
the veterans who died this past
year.
"It's encohraging for
our veterans. We have this
celebration and there's the
Veterans History Project at
the [Sedona Public] library
and the Daughters of the
American Revolution is
putting out flags at the ceme-
teries," Maassen said, "There
seems to be a renewed
interest in our veterans. It's
heartwarming."
