FORMER PROFESSIONAL PSYCHIC George [Matt Damon] reluctantly conducts a reading for Melanie [Bryce
Dallas Howard] in "Hereaf.er."
Eastwood's 'Hereafter' explores
both 'here' and 'after' our death
One of the most controversial
subjects of human debate today
is whether or not there is an
afterlife. Some people rely on
faith to tell them the answer,
others rely on science to deduce
a probable solution, while some
have absolutely no
belief in a life after
death.
Regardless of
your own personal
opinion on this matter,
"Hereafter" definitely
raises an interesting
viewpoint on the topic
itself and brings to
light a provocatively
new outlook on what
Could be out there
after we part from this
world.
Director Clint
ALUN WILE
eel
Eastwood along with writer
Peter Morgan, who's known
best for "Frost/Nixon," brings
us this fascinating new approach
to the great beyond. "Hereafter"
follows the lives of several
individuals who although they
have not yet met, all share a
connection to a place after
death. Marie LeLay lCecile
De France] is a famous French
television journalist on holiday
in Thailand who gets caught in
the middle of the 2004 Indian
Ocean tsunami. •
George Lonegan
[Matt Damon] is a
dock worker in San
Francisco who has
been trying to escape
his past as a psychic
medium to the dead.
Meanwhile in London,
12-year-olds Marcus
and Jason [Frankie
and George McLaren]
Movie Detective
are helping their drug-
addicted mother when
tragedy strikes.
The level of perfor-
mance from the entire
cast in this picture is certainly a
significant reason for the film's
charm. Bryce Dallas Howard
makes a stunning appearance,
albeit brief, while Lyndsey
Marshal pulls raw passion from
the crowd.
But. the lead actors in this
picture unquestionably steal the
show. This is the most dramatic
role Damon's had in a long time
and .his acting abilities and range
istruly shown here. De France
is beautiful and compelling and
the young McLarens will surely
have a prosperous career in the
motion picture industry.
The film does not focus so
much on the afterlife itself,
or attempt to sway anyone to
change their opinion on the
idea. It focuses, as the title
suggests, on the "here" aspect
of human mortality and the lives
it affects. Although this picture
• at times is slow going, it has a
certain mystic appeal that holds
your attention and stimulates
the imagination. Eastwood has
a knack for his attention to true
emotion and realism in his film
direction that is easily relatable
to its audience.
My suggestion is to go in with
an open mind so you'll leave
with a satisfied experience.
Movie Detective, written by
film critic Alun Wile, appears
every Friday in The Scene.
