We receive righteousness from God alone
CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH: Oct. 31
this year is Reformation Sunday. On thi s day we
celebrate the very heart of our faith, the gospel
of Christ, the good news that makes us free. .
Reformation is an ongoing task of the Holy
Spirit in the church. We pray that the Holy Spirit
will continue to unite the church today in its
proclamation and witness to the world.
A key scriptural text of the day is Romans
3:19-28. The words of the Apostle Paul stand at
the heart of the theology of Martin Luther and
the other leaders of the Reformation. No person
can make themselves right with God through
works of the law. We are brought into a right
relationship with God through the divine action
of God centered in Christ's death. This is a gift
of grace that liberates us from sin and death and
empowers our faith in Jesus Christ.
The irony is that we become righteous when
we give up all claims to moral righteousness
and receive righteousness from God alone.
Righteousness is a legal term of the gift given by
the judge himself.
The 8:30 a.m. service is our Traditional
Lutheran Liturgy; the 10:30 a.m. hour is a
more Contemporary Celebrate! service. Christ
Lutheran is located at 25 Chapel Road. For more
information, call 282-1022.
Questions,
UNITY CHURCH OF SEDONA: The
talk for Sunday, Oct. 31, by guest speaker
Rev. Charles Harper is entitled "In The
Beginning..." These talks explore the nature
of spiritual community [Oct. 17] , the nature
of the individual in relationship to spiritual
community [Oct. 24] and finally the nature of
Mother Father God [Oct. 31 ]. On Sunday, feel
free to attend as your light or shadow side.
These talks are designed not necessarily to
answer questions about the nature of commu-
nity, the individual and "source" but rather to
open doors to further exploration. Contrary to
popular belief, questions and doubt are not the
antithesis of faith but rather that ,&hich leads
doubt leads to more exploration
to deeper exploration of our faith journey.
After all when you believe you have a corner
on the truth, the whole truth and nothing but
the truth, why bother learning or exploring
anymore?
However, when we are humble enough to
have questions and doubts these can empower.
us as individuals and a community to further
exploration and deeper understanding of
the spiritual journey as individuals and as a
community.
Sunday morning services take place at 9 and
l 1 a.m. Unity Church of Sedona is located
at 65 Deer Trail Drive. For information, call
282-7181.

team Christ's mystery teachings
UNIVERSITY OF SEDONA: Higher
Consciousness Seminary founder Paul Leon
Masters personally presents over 50 years of
higher consciousness research on the innermost
meaning of Christ's parables. These mean-
ings; which give a vastly expanded meaning
to Christ's teachings, were taught only to,his
disciples as the general populace did not have
the direct higher consciousness experience to
comprehend. Hence the general populace was
taught what has become Christianity as it is for
general public consumption.
The mysteries of the parables will be shared in
a special service. This Sunday can open a whole
new dimension of the mind and soul as to one's
understanding of the meaning of Christ's words
and how they relate directly to practical applica-
tion to human life and living in today's world.
Sunday Services are conducted at the Sedona
Community Center at l l a.m. SCC is located
at 2615 Melody Lane. For information, call
203-0730.
Recognize your unity with God
SEDONA CHURCH OF RELIGIOUS
SCIENCE: An open invitation is extended for
you to join us each week and listen to a message
that will deepen your heart's connection to the
mystical events that happen throughout your
day. The Rev. Stanley Otterstrom's message this
Sunday is about "The Great Possibility."
You begin to understand the science of mind
when you come to see that you are the one who
plants the seed, but it is God who gives the
increase; you think the thought, and the law of
mind makes it manifest. Just as Jesus recognized
that he was one with God, so must you. When
you reach this point in your thinking you come
to know the great good which works through
you.
Your daily affirmation: "God's love always
embraces me, God's wisdom is always within
me, and God's joy is mine to share." Sunday
service is at 10 a.m. at Sedona Creative Life
Center, located at 333 Schnebly Hill Road. A
special note: On Nov. 7, Sunday Service will
begin at 9:30 a.m.
For more information, call 282-1446.
Blessed will know want, thirst
ST. ANDREW'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH: As
a reminder, the All Souls' Taize Remembrance
Service will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. Saturday,
Oct. 30. On All Saints' Sunday, in the Gospel
of Matthew reading, there are both words of
comfort and challenge. Those who are to find
blessing will know want and thirst, if not because
of their own circumstances, then for the sake
of others. Those who hunger for righteousness
will find fulfillment, but first they must suffer
persecution.
On Monday, the attorney general's satellite
office will be open at 3:30 p.m. The weekly
Community Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m.
The New Testament Greek Class will meet
at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday in the parish hall, and
a Contemplative Eucharist service will be
conducted at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary. A new
seminar series will begin at 5:30 p.m. looking at
the subject of mystics.
On Thursday, Bible Study will continue at
9:30 a.m. in the sanctuary, and on Friday the
Mary Martha Group will meet at l0 a.m. for
• prayer and study.
The yoga class meets on Monday in the sanc-
tuary, and the Pilates exercise group will meet
on Wednesday and Friday at 9 a.m.
St. Andrew's is located at 100 Arroyo Pifion
Drive. For more information, call 282-4457.

Find the message in the details
WAYSIDE BIBLE CHAPEL: The special
clothing of the High Priest of Israel was elabo-
rately detailed in Exodus 28. Is there a message
in all those details? How did it speak of the
Messiah that was to come? How does it affect
our relationship with God? We'll explore the
unique design and consider the implications of
God's descriptions.
Our hope is that you will join with us in
seeking the presence of the Holy Spirit as we
worship and study God's word. We want you to
experience God's love that is real and free. We
pray that you will encounter God and see him.
like you have never seen him before.
Our weekly worship service is at 10:30 a.m.,
with our Sunday morning Bible study starting
at 9:15 a.m. We also have small group Bible
studies. We are located at 401 N. SR 89A in
Uptown. Additional parking is available on the
upper level. Hearing assisted devices are avail-
able during the service. For more information,
call 282-4262.

Reclaim gospel each generation
THE CHURCH OF THE RED ROCKS: "For
the Bible Tells Me So" will be the featured film
at The Church of the Red Rocks on Friday,
Oct. 29, at 4 p.m. The film focuses on the expi-
ences of five Christian families as they handle
the realization of having a gay child.
A brief discussion will follow the screening.
The community is invited to share in this
screening about the vulnerability of these five
families, along with the challenges they faced
and their faith journeys.
Reformation Sunday will be marked with
the Rev. George Ault preaching about being
"Surrounded by Saints."
"To talk about the Reformation as a once-
and-done historical event is to miss the point
of the Christian call to claim and to reclaim the
gospel for each generation," Ault stated. "The
Reformation as a period of time several hundred
years ago is a neat and tidy package. It becomes
less obvious and less clearly defined as we move
closer to the present time. Reformers in every era
who renew the faith are truly the saints of God."
Additional events: Craft and Baked Goods
Fair is Friday, Oct. 29, 1 to 4 p.m., and Saturday,
Oct. 30, 9 a.m. to noon. Also offered is an Adult
Education Class every Wednesday and Saturday
from 10 a.m. to noon.
The church is located at 54 Bowstring Drive.
Services are at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m., with child-
care and Sunday School for children during
the 10:30 a.m. service. For information, call
