Nominate
residents
for 2010
KSB award
Keep Sedona Beautiful is
inviting all residents and local
organizations to submit nomi-
nations for its annual awards•
Each year since 1972, KSB has
recognized individuals, busi-
nesses and organizations in
greater Sedona for architectural
designs, landscaping, lighting,
signage, conservation efforts
and community service which
contribute in a significant way
to its goal of "preserving the
wonder" of Sedona.
There are several different
categories for these awards.
New or redesigned buildings
will be judged on the basis of
their harmony with the natural
environment beyond what is
required by municipal or county
regulations.
KSB members believe the
scenic beauty of Sedona should
be protected and that the built
environment, including archi-
tecture, landscaping, signage
and outdoor lighting, should
never compete for attention With
natural surroundings, day or
night.
Single-family homes are not
usually considered for these
awards; however, single-family
homes will be considered for
these awards if there is an
exceptional innovation in envi-
• ronmental construction.
Attention will be given to
major improvements in existing
buildings, including change.s
to lighting and signage which
previously did not conform to
these standards• Innovations
in environmentally-sensitive
building, native low-water-use
landscaping and elimination
of nonconforming signs will
be considered as well. Special
attention will be given to energy
and other resource conservation
efforts that reduce the commu-
nity's footprint on the land and
fit with the community's natural
environment.
Community Service Awards
will be made for outstanding
contribution to the community.
Keep Sedona Beautiful is espe-
cially looking for significant
efforts of community service
that are normally "under the
radar."
The deadline for nominations
is Friday, Nov. 5. Residents
should send nominations in
writing using a tbrm which is
available on the KSB website.

volunteering to be part of the
AARP Tax-Aide team that will
be preparing and filing taxes
for those in need of this type of
service•
Each year from Feb. 1 through
tax day April 15, AARP Tax-
Aide volunteers prepare
federal and state tax returns
for low- and middle-income
taxpayers at no charge. AARP
Tax-Aide, the nation's largest,

tance and preparation service

Sedona. Volunteers of all ages

classes in January in basic tax
law and return preparation. In
addition to the training time in
January, volunteers are asked to
participate a minimum of four
hours per week from Tuesday,
Feb. 1, until Friday, April 15.
Last year Sedona volunteers
helped more than 500 people
file their personal income tax
forms at the Sedona Public
Library. The volunteers get
a great deal of satisfaction
helping people deal with the
challenges of preparing their
tax forms• For those who want
to help themselves and others
with their tax returns, this is
the program.

Mourn loss of children and infants at walk00toc at
Jeanne Cacciatore, Ph.D., a grief
therapist, researcher and founder
of the MISS Foundation, Will host
an inaugural Barefoot Walkabout in
Sedona on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 11
a.m. The walkabout is being held in
honor of October as Infant and Child
Death Awareness Month.
The Barefoot Walkabout is a mind-
fulness-based, grief-coping strategy
developed by Cacciatore in 2007.
Since then, she has become an
avid barefoot walkabout participant,
walking barefoot in silence.
She found that along the treacherous
path during the barefoot walkabout,
many metaphors manifested, and she
began to understand her own journey
of grief in relationship to the deaths
of her daughter, both her parents, and
her best friend in very different ways.
These metaphors began to take on
powerful meaning to her, and each
time she went through a barefoot
walkabout, she discovered something
new about herself and the process
of mourning, according to a press
release.
Cacciatore stated in a press release,
"The Barefoot Walkabout is an inten-
tional practice of being fully present,
in the moment, with our current state
of mind and heart. It's an unforget-
table journey."
Online registration for the Barefoot
Walkabout is $25 and includes a
T-shirt. The Barefoot WalkaboUt
is also a fundraiser for the MISS
Foundation, and pledge forms are
available to invite support from family
and friends.
Check-in begins at 11 a.m., and
the hike will begin promptly at noon.
Following the hike there will be a
Barefoot Gathering to discuss the
experience at the Center for Loss
and Trauma at 490 Brewer Road in
Sedona.
Anyone who is mourning the loss
of a child or loved one is asked to
consider attending this event.
The Brewer Trail is a 2.5-mile
moderate hike whose summit boasts
the beautiful.panoramic view of the
Airport Mesa in Sedona. Climbers
with heart conditiofis or other health
conditions should consult their physi-
cian prior to the hike.
Trailhead parking is available right
across the street at the Wesleyan
Church at 580 Brewer Road in
Sedona.
