Photos by Tom Hood/ Larson Newspapers Author talks at park about Sedona's geology The First Sunday Program at Red Rock State Park will be held Nov. 7, at 3 p.m. in the Park Theatre. The park welcomes geolo- gist and award-winning author Wayne Ranney as he presents a slide program and talk about Sedona's Geologic Heritage. Sedona is well-known for its beautiful red rock scenery and geologists are still making discoveries as they unearth the cryptic secrets of the origin of the landscape. A resident of Flagstaff since 1978, Ranney's passion for Southwestern geology took root during his years as a backcountry ranger in the Grand Canyon. Ranney's degrees include a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in geology from Northern Arizona University. He completed his master's thesis by mapping the House Mountain area near Sedona. Ranney has traveled the world as a geologic interpreter aboard ships and jets, as well as on various natural history expedi- tions. He has been to Antarctica 30 times, as well as the Amazon, the Canadian Arctic, Greenland, the Gobi Desert, the Russian Far East, and the North and South Poles. He is a former professor of geology at Yavapai College and there is nothing he enjoys more than teaching about landscapes. Ranney has written many award-winning books, including "Sedona Through Time," "Ancient Landscapes of the Colorado Plateau" and "Carving Grand Canyon." The newest edition of "Sedona Through Time" recently received the Outstanding Publication Award from the Association of Earth Science Editors. In addition, Ranney has served as a writer for Arizona Highways, Sedona Magazineand Earth Magazine. Red Rock State Park is located at 4050 Lower Red Rock Loop Road, Sedona. Reservations are recommended, as seating is limited. The program is free for four adults in a car with $10 paid admission to the park. For addi- tional information and reserva- tions, call 282-6907. Paid Advertisement Proof that an Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure Vernon Jorgenson has been a patient of Dr. Neil Singer's MDVIP-affiliated primary care practice for just over a year and believes he'll enjoy a lon- ger life as a result of the highly personalized healthcare he re- ceives. At age 76, Mr. Jorgenson had his first colonoscopy, well beyond the recommended age of 50. For many years prior to being in the care of Dr. Singer, Mr. Jorgenson was told that he should have a colonoscopy, but he ignored the advice because he was predominantly healthy and unclear of the importance of this screening. At the urging of his new MDVIP-affiliated physician, Mr. Jorgenson had a change of heart when Dr. Sing- er said, "Vernon, although you are a healthy man, you need a colonoscopy. I would hate to lose you just because you wouldn't have a simple test." Mr. Jorgenson not only had a colonoscopy, but he also had cancer surgery. The results of the test showed a cancerous polyp, which would not have caused symptoms until the cancer was in a more advanced stage and possibly incurable. Although the polyp was found early, it was located in an ayea of his colon which complicates surgery and can result in the during appointments to explain colon being removed.
