Alice can save world from zombies
but can t save plot from Hollywood Tlaquepaque Awa,ts ~
As a tremendous fan of both Stroll on in for lunch or If
the video games and the three
previous films that "Resident
Evil: Afterlife" is based on, I had
high hopes that Screen Gems
would finally redeem itself and
bring a valid
closure to the
series. After
seeing this
picture, I'm
not totally
convinced
that they did.
After all, the
precursor
"Resident Evil:
M0ie Detective Extinction"
had extremely
ALUNWILE little to do
• .. with the
actual video
games, and
portraying the entire film in
a futuristic desert made little
sense. Still, for those who know
nothing of the Capcom cash cow
known as "Resident Evil" or the
17 separate titled games in its
series, Hollywood seems to be
doing well in raking in its own
revenue.
"Resident Evil: Afterlife" is a
film that regardless of keeping
up with the original story line
portrayed in the games, viewers
can still enjoy without reading up
on the backstory. Unfortunately,
viewers will need to see the
three preceding films to follow
what's going on in this movie.
But here's the gist: a pharmaceu-
tical company named Umbrella
makes a biological weapon that
turns the living into super-strong,

ALICE [MILLA JOVOVICH] is the only human who can carry a deadly

unpredictable, mutated creatures
and the dead into flesh-hungry
zombies. Regrettably there is
a huge outbreak that spreads
across the world and it is up to
Alice [Milla Jovovich], who
also happens to be the only
human that can carry the T-virus
without mutating, to stop the
evil Chairman Wesker and the
Umbrella Corporation before all
humanity is lost.
Interesting story to say the
least, but here's where the film
industry faltered. Even though
Alice was never a character
in any of the video games and
was created solely to facilitate
the lead role in the pictures, the
writers still tried to introduce
main characters from the games
into the films. However, the
uneducated viewer who doesn't
know the first thing about the
games will have no point of
reference. The avid game player
can clearly see that those charac-
ters are referenced improperly to
a point of disgust.
Now I am by no means saying
this film wasn't enjoyable or
entertaining, and if you can
see it in 3-D you might as well
because that's the way this film
was specifically designed to be
seen. But at what point do we say
enough is enough and stop the
filming industry from crashing
a wrecking ball into stories we
love?
If Hollywood did to Harry
Potter what it did to Resident
Evil, there would be mass
hysteria, riots would ensue, and
London would be burned to the
ground.
