TODD TIJERINA RETURNS to Sedona to promote his new album, "Walk This Road," on Friday, Sept. 17.
On Friday, Sept. 17, Tijerina
returns to The Olde Sedona
Bar & Grill to showcase its
command of a fierce brand
of original blues-rock as the
Albuquerque, N.M.-based
group expands promotion
efforts for its newest album,
"Walk This Road," released in
2009.
Todd Tijerina's unique sound
is a result of his own take on
songwriting. "I try to sound
like me and no one else," he
stated in a press release.
"Generally I build around a
bass line that I've written and
try to invent a melody for the
top, incorporating funk, rock
and jazz ideas," which helps
explain his contribution's rele-
vancy to blues as an evolving
art form.
Tijerina's credits include
working as a guitarist for inter-
nationally revered blues veteran
Byther Smith, the legendary
Harmonica Hinds, and BB's
daughter, Shirley King. The
band is based in Albuquerque,
though it is originally from
Chicago where in 1999 it won
Chicagoland's Rory's Blues
Talent Competition which
included 35 blues acts from
across the country.
Tijerina is accompanied
by his outstanding rhythm
section of Dave Heidt on bass
and background vocals
and Curly Castillo on drums
and background vocals,
both of whom have toured
nationally and recorded with
various blues, funk, Latin, rock,
blues and world beat artists.
Together they are well estab-
lished as a force to experience
firsthand.
"We always anticipate
performing in Sedona," Tijerina
stated. "People there are very
enthusiastic about having fun
and genuinely supportive of our
music."
Olde Sedona Bar & Grill
is located at 1405 W. SR 89A
in Sedona. Tijerina's show is
scheduled from 9 p.m. until
12:45 a.m.

"All U Can Eat"
Seattle singer will
serenade Sedona
Pianist-songstress Jill Cohn
will return to Arizona in support
of her eighth CD, "Every street
Inside of You -- Mexico City."
The Seattle singer and song-
writer will appear in concert at
the Oak Creek Brewing Co. on
Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 6 p.m.
After suffering a yearlong
writer's block, Cohn took a
leap of faith and found herself
in Mexico, alone, not speaking
the language and arriving at
an Internet-found sublet. The
place was magic for Cohn, and
she began writing for her now
completed indie-piano CD. The
disc was produced by Ethan
Allen, whose credits include
producing Kristin Hersh, Patty
Griffin and Jim Watts, according
to a press release.
With her musical tales of her
adventures now completed,
Cohn released the CD in early
2009, and has been on tour for
most of the year in support of
the disc. Her song, "Rescue
Dog" has become a mainstay on
Triple A and College Radio,
and was used in the WB's
"Smallville" last fall.
Cohn will be on tour with Bay
Area guitarist Dave Sampson,
who met Cohn while she was
on tour in California. Sampson
has roots in both Austin and
Memphis, and he brings a fresh
array of sounds and textures to
Cohn's music.
