2B - RED ROCK NEWS, Sedona, Arizona Friday, September 17, 2010 RELIGION Wayside Bible Chapel Pastor Paul Wallace Sunday Bible Study 9:15 A.M. Sunday Worship Service 10:30 A.M. Call for Bible Studies during the week 928.282.4262 401 N. SR 89A, Uptown Sedona www.waysidechapelsedona.com email: wayside@netscape.com Sedona Church of Religious Science 'REE MARK POPE, MINISTER Sunday Morning Services 9:00 &11:00 a.m. % 65 DeerTrail Drive 282-7181 Lessons can be learned from shrewdness CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH: The gospel text for the 17th Sunday after Pentecost will give both the reader and preacher a jolt. In it, Jesus tells a story of how Christians might have something to learn from a shrewd manager who has been caught mismanaging his employer's property. Knowing he was about to be fired and unemployed, the manager did his "networking" to ensure his connections in his field of work. Although the manager was at best unethical, and at worst a thief, Jesus suggests that there might be something to be learned from his shrewdness [Luke 16:1-13]. We have difficulty in understanding the message because most of us would interpret the word shrewd as illegal and deceiving. The first definition, however, brings a different under- standing, "astute or sharp in practical matters." Wise in practical matters is not always a virtue of the Christian. One of those arenas is the discipline of finance. This shewd businessman knew how to cover his losses in a difficult economic environment. Jesus suggests that the Christian, too, should learn to be astute and sharp in practical matters. That advice brings into balance some of the unwise actions of those who want to follow Jesus in totally counter- intuitive ways. The 8;30 a.m. service is a Traditional Lutheran Liturgy; the 10:30 a.m. service is a more Contemporary Celebrate! worship. The two groups are connected by a Coffee Fellowship Time from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m. Christ Lutheran Sedona is located at 25 Chapel Road. For information, call 282-1022. Find a way to release your anger SEDONA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH: Family relationships can bring us great joy, but they can also be very difficult. When someone we love hurts us, we can carry that pain around with us for a long time; anger and resentment can become a destructive pres- • ence in our lives unless we find a way to let those emotions go. How do we let go of the past, forgive our families, and move on to a new and different future? Join us for worship this Sunday for worship at 9:30 as the Rev. Matt Ashley preaches the message, "Forgiving Families." On Saturday, Sept. 25, SUMC www,twitter.com/ChurchoftheRedRocks commandment of warm 928-282-7963 hospitality. THE CHURCH OF THE RED ROCKS: focus on is the solid nature of the values each of us holds. We live by values. Values control everything we do, say or think. We cannot see, measure or taste values, but they are a very real part of our lives. "Our values have been a part of our existence since we took our first breath. In fact, in a spiri- tual sense our values have surrounded us before we even saw the light of day." The question Ault will raise to worshipers this Sunday is what are your values? What are the life commandments which dominate and direct your lives? "Pushing this concept to the corporate level we can also ask ourselves what the values of our congregation are," Ault stated. "Each congrega- tion has a set of values by which it lives out the gospel. Some congregations exist to meet and eat. Some congregations love to sing and pray 'and worship together. Still other congregations are very mission-minded as they seek to help others both locally and globally. Some congrega- tions see great value in planting new churches." Ault concludes that every congregation is "Solid to the Core." The question is what is that core? What moves and inspires you and your congregation? Located at 54 Bowstring Drive, the church offers worship services at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Childcare and Sunday School are available during the 10:30 service. For information, call 282-7963. Jesus calls on the sinners ST. ANDREW'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH: This Sunday in the Gospel reading Jesus meets Matthew sitting at the tax booth. Upon Jesus' request to "follow me" we hear of Jesus and his disciples having dinner with other tax collectors and sinners. The Pharisees wondered how Jesus would eat with such people. Jesus responds, "Those who are well have no need of a physi- cian, but those who are sick." Jesus came to call not on the righteous but sinners. The 8 a.m. service is a spoken Rite I and the 10 a.m. service is a choral Rite II with traditional hymns and music. UNIVERSITY OF SEDONA: Do you believe that if you think negative thoughts, you will liter- ally attract what you don't want to you? Perhaps that seems true because negativity does seem to result in experiences that you don't like. But why do those unwanted situations really occur? Do you actually attract those circumstances into your life? Or could there be another explanation? Could there be an explanation that will free you from overly fearing your own thoughts? This Sunday, the Rev. Steven Lane Taylor will explore those questions, and invite you to consider that there is only one power operating in this world. It is the power of God. It is the power of good. And what you experience jn life is the result of either using that power, or not. Sunday educational services under the auspices of the University of Sedona College of Advanced Spirituality emphasizing transcen- dent spiritual explorations are conducted at the Sedona Community Center at 11 a.m. SCC is located at 2615 Melody Lane. For information, call 203-0730. Study the Book of the Covenant WAYSIDE BIBLE CHAPEL: This Sunday we will continue our study in the Book of the Covenant. It ends with worship instructions from which we learn more of the character and plan of God. But the final words are a warning. It is a warning that we see the national failed to take heed. It is one we are warned to take to heart. Our hope is that you will join with us in seeking the presence of the Holy Spirit as we study God's word. We want you to experience God's love that is real and free. We pray that you will encounter God and see Him like you have never seen Him before. Our weekly worship service is at 10:30 a.m., with our Sunday morning Bible study starting at 9:15 a.m. We also have small group Bible studies.
