RED ROCK NEWS, Sedona, Arizona Friday, September 17, 2010 - 1B
Meet new Westerners trail boss
As the Sedona Westerners
approach their 50th anniversary
as an official social club, George
Witteman has taken office as
trail boss, aka president, for the
2010-2011 hiking season.
Witteman, a retired board
certified ophthalmologist of 35
years from
Wausau, Wis.,
is married with
two grown
daughters. He
and wife Pat
were enticed to
explore Sedona
after friends
had honey-
mooned at a
local lodge. Sedona
The Witte' Westerners
mans traveled
to Sedona
and stayed at BARBARA
a lodge each O'CONNOR
year for five or
eee
six years. They
purchased a
home in Sedona in 1997, first
spending five to six weeks in
Sedona. Witteman semiretired
in 2003 and followed with a full
retirement in 2006.
Although they briefly looked
to Florida for retirement,
Sedona's climate and mountains
changed their minds.
Witteman has always been
physically active, starting with
being a high school Student
Athlete of the Year, receiving
a track scholarship to Loyola
University in Chicago, and
finishing with a World Wrist
Wrestling Championship
[ABC's "Wide World of
Sports"], winning second place.
It is not unusual for Witteman to
participate in several of the exer-
cise classes given at the Sedona
Golf Resort each week.
Early in 1991, after reading the
Westerners articles in the Sedona
Red Rock News for about three
months, the Wittemans decided
to contact Trail Boss Sandy
Unger and join the group.
Although Witteman enjoyed
biking and water sports in
Wisconsin, this would be his first
experience with an organized
hiking group. The Westerners
Club filled Witteman's ongoing
spirit for outdoor adventure.
Unger was instrumental in
getting him involved with the
Westerners as well as the Verde
Valley Archaeology Society,
Sedona Historical Society and
the Road Scholars [ElderHostel
Inc.].

GEORGE WITTEMAN took the office of trail boss for the Sedona We.sterners 2010-2011 hiking season.
Witteman permanently moved to Sedona in 2006 with his wife, Pat.
and Peter Baenziger also took
over coordinating hikes for
Exploritas in the Sedona'area.
A couple Of favorite hikes for
that group are Bear Wallow,
when there is water running in
the canyon, and Mitten Ridge
to Biker's Hangover. As if time
were no issue, Witteman has
been an archaeology docent for
Friends of the Forest for the last
four years.
We can. thank Ginny O'Brien
for our new leader this year. It
was her request of Witteman to
become assistant cactus dodger
a few years ago, and that started
him on his first stepping stone
to become trail boss. As trail
boss, Witteman's focus this year
is to honor the history of the
Westerners and celebrate their
50 years. Witteman would like
the February meeting program
to honor past members and to
involve as many early members
as are available. Witteman's
method for being an effective
leader is to take the neces-
sary time, be prepared, and
share his responsibilities with
fellow Westerners. It prom-
ises to be a great 50th year for
the Westerners.
The Westerners always
welcome new members. If you
are interested in joining the club,
log onto our website at www.
sedonawestemers.org. You may
also join by attending a monthly
meeting; our next one will be
on Thursday, Sept. 23, begin-
ning at 7 p.m., at the Jewish
Community.
Sedona Westerners, written
this week by Barbara O'Connor,
appears every Friday in the
Sedona Red Rock News.
Work on
lift station
started on k,usiness
Sept. 13
Tiffany Construction, in
conjunction with the city of
Sedona, began construction of the
Northview Lift Station Project on
Sept. 13. The project is sched-
uled for completion Saturday,
March 12.
This project will provide a new
sewer lift station to replace the
existing lift station adjacent to
the existing drainage wash elimi-
nating the potential for a sewage
spill in the event of flooding.
Due to the deep excavation
required by this project, a short
distance of Panorama Boulevard
will need to be closed. This
closure will extend from 165
Panorama Blvd. to 185 Panorama
Blvd. and will be closed no
longer than 14 days. Residents
and service providers will be
notified at least one week prior
to the beginning of the closure.
While residents will experience
inconveniences, all residents and
Service providers, such as trash,
mail, deliveries and others, will
be able to access the closure area
from either direction. Through
traffic will not be permitted
during this period.
In addition to the closure, there
will be occasions when traffic
will be restricted to one lane.
Please be aware of traffic control
signage and flagging personnel.
Tiffany Construction and its
employees will make a focused
and concentrated effort to mini-
mize noise and dust but will
be unable to eliminate ' either
nuisance entirely due to the large
amount of rock it is anticipated
will be encountered on this
project. Full compliance with all
city codes and ordinances will be
maintained for the duration of the
project.
Anyone with questions or
concerns regarding this project is
asked to contact Herb Tiffany at
204-9817.
