Scorpions sweep Wickenburg,. 3-0
By Brian Bergner Jr
LARSON NEWSPAPERS
The Sedona Red Rock
High School volleyball team
made quick work of visiting
Wicken-
burg High Wranglers 0
School on Scorpions 3
Tuesday,
Sept. 14, sweeping the
Wranglers, 3-0.
"We came out strong and
with a lot of energy but started
to let up a bit as the match
went on, and there wasn't
enough passion it seemed/'
longtime Sedona Head Coach
John Parks said.
That "passion" Parks speaks
of might be because fans in the
stands needed a heart monitor
to measure the Wranglers'
pulse as Wickenburg seemed
disinterested in playing
Tuesday night.
Wickenburg was ranked
No. 1 in the Arizona Inter-
scholastic Association power
point polls before Tuesday's
loss but the Wranglers turned
in a lethargic effort, surprising
not only the Sedona fans in the
stands but the team as well.
One fan even shouted,
"Are you even trying?" to
Wickenburg after a timeout.
To begin the match, the
Scorpions were up 11-3 in
the first game, but a rally by
Wickenburg brought the score
to 20-18 before Parks called a
much needed timeout.
After the timeout, Sedona
found a way to dig deep and
get the win, 25-19.
From then on, the Wranglers
struggled and Sedona took
advantage, winning game
two 25-16. After senior Sarah
Schlener's ace serve, the
Scorpions won game three
25-6 to seal the match.
Wickenburg recorded 18
kills on the match but had 13
hitting errors and 10 service
errors, causing them to lose
all momentum.
For the Scorpions, junior
Katie Furlong led the team
with 11 kills and seven ace
serves while sophomore
Brenna Barker had 18 assists,
two digs and three ace serves.
Senior Rachel Cook had

seven kills and sophomore
newcomer Arianna Thode
led the Scorpions with four
blocks.
Junior Chelsea Strong led
the Scorpions with 11 digs.
With the victory, Sedona
improves to 4-1 [14-5, tour-
nament play] overall on the
season with several matches
on the docket over the next
two weeks.
The Scorpions were in
action again Thursday,
Sept. 16, against Camp Verde
High School but results were
unavailable at press time.
Next up, Sedona will travel
south to participate in the
Estrella Foothills Invitational
which is set to begin Friday,
Sept. 17.
After road games with
Chino .Valley High School
and Estrella Foothills High
School, Sedona returns home
Thursday, Sept. 30, to face"
Chino Valley.
Scheduled start time for the
Chino Valley match is set for
6 p.m.
Coconino Tournament
The Scorpions played
some of their best volleyball
this season at the Coconino
Invitational Tournament this
past weekend, earning second
place after losing to Flagstaff

ship match.

coach at Sedona for volley-
ball. It was truly amazing,"
Parks said of his team's effort
Saturday, Sept. 11.
Since tournaments are
played in a different format
than regular season games,
coaches usually just give their
record for games won and lost
in a particular tournament.
The Scorpions went .an
amazing 14-5 on Saturday,
earning a spot in the title game
only to fall short to Flagstaff.
"We were gassed. It was a
long day and we just ran out
of steam but that doesn't take
away from what we did there,"
Parks said.

LARSON NEWSPAPERS'
Fresh off the Show Low
Invitational Tournament, the
Verde Valley School girls soccer
team opened its regular season
schedule Tuesday, Sept. 14,
suffering
a loss to Cougars 5
visiting Coyotes 0
Chino
Valley High School, 5-0.
"We have a young, small group
of girls this season, but they are
a very dedicated, unified group
of girls," second-year Verde
Valley Head Coach Catrien Van
Assendelft said.
The Coyotes managed 13 shots
on goal Tuesday against Chino
Valley, three of which came in the
last 10 minutes of the game when
Verde Valley had eight players on
the field.
Due to injuries, Verde Valley
had only 12 to start the match,
but a few other girls found them-
selves with ice packs on their legs
by the time the match was over.
"I'm incredibly proud of this
team. They support each other
100 percent. They give every-
thing they have and that's enough
for me. We had a few minor inju-
ries against Chino Valley but they
will heal," Van Assendelft said.
Offensively, the Coyotes had
plenty of opportunities to score
but couldn't punch one through.
Defensively, Verde Valley had
a hard time keeping Chino Valley
freshman standout Christina Ard
out of the net as she recorded
her first career hat trick for the
Cougars.
Ard's first goal came in the
31 st minute as she sprinted down
the middle of the field and lofted
a ball over a few Verde Valley
players for the score.
Chino Valley recorded 27 shots
Tuesday, most of which were on
goal and several were from Ard
at the striker position.
Leading 2-0 at halftime, Ard
scored two more goals in the
48th and 54th minute to give the
Cougars a 4-0 lead, which all but
put away the Coyotes.
Van Assendelft said her
Coyotes for the most part are
learning the game of soccer,
stating Verde Valley has several
new players this season and only
four returners from 2009.
"I especially commend our
captains, Morgan Binder, Raven
Saunders-Duckett and Brianna
Gonzalez for being so positive and
helping the rest ofthe girls learn
the game," Van Assendelfl said.
Verde Valley was in action
again Thursday, Sept. 16, when
they traveled to Desert Christian
Academy. Results were unavail-
able at press time.
Next up, the Coyotes will
take their 0-1 [0-1, IA-3A West]
record and play host to River
Valley High School on Thursday,
Sept. 23, with a scheduled start
time of 2:30 p.m.
