Church gears up for Cn::istmas By Mark Lineberger LARSON NEWSPAPERS Christmas may seem like it's still a ways off, but they're already starting to get into the spirit at one Verde Valley church. There were open casting calls over the weekend at Emmanuel Fellowship in Cottonwood as the church prepares to rehearse for the 15th annual "Celebration of Christmas," a performance described by its organizers as a spectacular "Broadway-style musical production" as well as the largest Christmas production in Northern Arizona. "It's gotten to be a pretty elaborate production," said Mikel Swank, the show's producer. The performance tells the story of an angel named Lucy, who comes to Earth on a mission to show the true meaning of Christmas to a lonely young woman named Eliza. The orga- nizers liken it to "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens mixed with "It's a Wonderful Life." To pull it off, the show requires more than 200 people to perform as actors and behind-the-scenes crew, and that's not including the assortment of live animals. Swank, who has been involved with the show.all 15 years, said the production has grown little by little each and every year. "It was small when we started," Swank said. "The first year the wise men came in on horses." Today, the three wise men arrive on the scene by camel. There's even a zebra this time around, Swank said. "It's collaboration," Swank said. "We try a lot of different stuff to help keei9 [the show] fresh." Speaking of music, there's quite a bit. The show calls for speaking and nonspeaking parts, along with plenty of singing and dancing. For people not so much interested in taking their bow before the audi- ence, there is plenty of opportu- nity to work with everything from video and lighting to makeup and costuming. After the show's organizers figure out who made the audi- tions, rehearsals will start the first week in October. There are three types of tickets to the show: free tickets; silver tickets, which cost $15 and guarantee a seat; and gold tickets, which cost $25 and untenable as the production grew. "As you can expect, it's obvious a production of this size and scale is going to cost money," Swank said. While the show does get some money through sponsor- ships, Swank said the costs of the show started to become a drain on the church. "It would drain money from other ministries here," Swank said. Still, the organizers promise the price of a ticket should be well worth it. There will be six shows that run from Friday to Tuesday, Dec. 3 to Dec. 7, at Emmanuel Fellowship, located at 1580 East Fir St. in Cottonwood. For more information, call the production department at 634-3034, ext. 102, or check it out on Facebook under EF Productions.
