4A- RED ROCK NEWS, Sedona, Arizona Frid,ay, September 17, 2010 OPINION EDffORIAL Tax credit program helps organizations that serve Sedona Keeping local resources circulating within our own community seems easy enough. Giving to organizations that serve Sedona isn't a novel idea. However, many area residents aren't taking advantage of a little gift the state of Arizona has given service organizations. Arizona's tax credit program allows state taxpayers to decide where their state income tax dollars are spent. Paying taxes can seem like shoveling money into a black hole without a clear picture of what the dollars pay for or where each individual makes a difference. Arizona's program allows its residents to account for the income tax dollars they pay. Tax credits are broken into three categories and an individual or couple can contribute ineach of the three areas for up to a specified amount. The taxpayers write a check to the organizations of their choice and then are reimbursed by the state come tax time. An added bonus is the opportunity to then write off the contribution as a charitable donation on taxpayers' federal income taxes. The taxpayer gets to decide where his or her state income tax dollars are spent and receives a federal charitable write-off while a local organization can count on a little more money to fund its service -- a win-win for the entire community. Not all organizations or groups qualify for tax credit donations. The state selects organizations who meet specific criteria and qualify for the program. In the wake of Arizona's financial crisis the tax credit program has Somehow survived. However, immunity has not be granted to any state tax- funded program and how long tax credit donations will be possible is uncertain. Figure out which organizations you'd like to contribute to by December and give them a hand while helping yourself next April. -- Trista Steers Managing Editor LETTERS POLICY The Sedona Red Rock News welcomes your viewpoints: Send let- ters by e-mail to editor@larsonnewspapers.com or mail to: "Opinion" Sedona Red Rock News P.O. RUN FOR I3"! IT'S GOING TO COST US MONEY. NEWS Letters to the Editor Firefighter calls for a stop to nonsense After reading and witnessing contin- uous rhetoric being passed back and forth regarding the Sedona Fire District for the past two years, I am calling for a stop to the nonsense. Having been involved as a firefighter for the past 10 years, I have never witnessed anything like this. What started out as an effort to reduce costs to the taxpayers without disrupting services has now turned into personal attacks and created an adversarial environment between members of the district and some members of the current SFD Governing Board and community. I can personally tell you that I, along witl others, became involved as a fire- fighter to help citizens of Sedona during their time of need and to provide the community levels of service of which they can be proud. Although SFD has been able to maintain this level of service in spite of the dramatic cuts to department budgets, these service levels have become danger- ously compromised by unnecessary reduc- tions based on personal agendas. Your firefighter/emergency medical service providers are here for one reason and one reason only and that reason is you. We want to ensure your emergency, regardless of the nature, is resolved in a timely, efficient manner by the most qual- ified and professional providers possible. In an effort to end the negative misin- formation being dispersed throughout some portions of the community, I am asking for your assistance by directing any questions, comments or concerns to the professionals who have the correct information. In a time in our nation where negative information is abundant, please do your part to stop rumors and misin- formation. Our goal as public service employees is to be there for you when you dial 9-1-1, but we need your help to ensure this happens. Jordon Baker, Secretary Sedona-Verde Valley Firefighters Association My vote wouldn't count, but if it did... Sue Clemenz, you are so right about the Village of Oak Creek name [Sedona Red Rock News, Letters to the Editor, Sept, 10]. My husband and I moved to VOC in 1986 and even then I wondered why they named that section of Sedona the Village of Oak Creek. I too said, "Where's Oak Creek?" I thought it should have been named Bell Rock, Ariz. Regarding changing the sign on State Route 179, I put my vote in now for South Sedona Bell Rock Village. We reside in Cottonwood now, so my vote wouldn't count.
