RED ROCK NEWS, Sedona, Arizona Friday, May ,28, 2010 - 3B Adopted pets make you feel important You are cordially invited to participate in a fun day of golf and help the Humane Society of Sedona generate funds for our new facility as we continue to provide the best care tbr the animals in our commu- nity. Forms are available online at www.humanesocietyofsedona. com; for further information, call the Humane Society of Sedona fat 282-4679. A common question asked when people visit our facility is "Do you have any puppies?" We all agree that puppies are cute, but require a lot of time and attention. We encourage possible adopters to opt for a mellow dog, at least well past puppyhood, and one that can ease into your lifestyle with few hassles. There are many benefits to adopting an older animal from our animal care center. You will have a grateful dog. Cho0sing an older animal helps eliminate the guess- work about their full adult size and temperament which can be uncer- tain with a shelter puppy. Another advantage in choosing a grown-up dog is that the trial and error learning phase is over. The dog is housebroken and sleeps through the night, needs fewer trips to the vet and has outgrown the urge to chew everything. It has probably learned good manners, is unlikely to jump on people and will stop protective barking when told to. Most important, your dog has already learned how to learn. Though your home may be run differently from its previous home, the dog's brain is wired to follow human direction and adapt to your schedule. It more than likely under- stands its place in the family pack. It can be gentle with children and had enough experience to know when to seek out a quiet place, away from the demands of toddlers. An older dog, espe- cially one that has already shared a household or played with other pets, is more likely to meld into the current regime estab- lished by your dogs and cats. The humane society staff evaluates the dog's temperament and Paw Prints behavior to ensure it is placed with an appro- JACQUIF priate guardian. Many adoptive parents appre- eA, DAtt elate the basic training . °. the dogs receive while at the shelter, making them easier to live with. Part of the dog evaluation is to discem what breed dominates its mix. The size and shape of body and head, the length and shape of tail, ears and feet, the slope of the chest and the coat texture and coloring all offer clues. Whether a dog's breed can be determined or not, our animal care center personnel will interact with it to judge its energy level and interests. The animal will be exposed to different situations. Does it need to run and jump? Does it beg and charm to get human attention? How does it relate to men and women, to children, to other dogs and cats? All of this is important information for the perspective adopter. As you introduce your new old dog into your home, you will need to read each other's person- alities. As "top dog" it is your responsibility to build good communications. Your objective is to build a strong bond, to help the dog be a loyal companion who feels loved and appreciated. Most older shelter dogs are good dogs. They have often been through sad situa- tions, but they give you love and adoration. It is as if they speak to you in a tongue all their own that says, "Love me forever, and I will always love you the same." With dogs in our lives, we aren't house-proud. If we were, we wouldn't abide the scratches on the door, the holes in the screen, the mottled carpet or the hair clinging to our clothes. Dog lovers are a tolerant lot, finding greater value in the unabashed affection of friends rather than an immaculate sofa. Shoes can be replaced, but the feeling for canine companions is priceless. a aaa {gaa00 7 Ask about our Pets for Seniors. This is a program for people 65 or older and with a limited income who may qualify for the adoption fee to be waived. Without my two German shep- herds Koby and K.C., my house would simply be a receptacle for things. I find comfort with their presence even at 4:45 a.m. when they are there to greet and remind me it's time for their walk. Thank goodness for early morning light. They are there to greet me when I get home from work, they protect me, and both have carved a place in my heart that is irreplaceable. They make me feel like the most impor- tant person in the world. Who could ask for more? June is Adopt a Shelter Cat month, so the Paw Prints articles will be geared to our feline friends. If you have been thinking of adding a furry feline to your household, this would be a good time to check out the wonderful selection we have, of all ages. Paw Prints, written this week by Jacquie Randall, volunteer coor- dinator for the Humane Society of Sedona, appears every Friday in the Sedona Red Rock News.
