Trike-A-Thon raises
money for hospital
The inaugural Sedona Trike- scientific and medical communi-
A-Thon, on Sunday, May 16, at ties around the world. St. Jude

Hospital.
With the support of local spon-
sors, local .preschool children
learned about bike safety before
embarking on a custom-made
obstacle course. The children
enjoyed snacks and worked with
local artist Jan Sullivan to create
a card for the children at St.
Jude. A silent auction featured
children's bicycling helmets.
"St. Jude is the leader in the
fight against catastrophic child-
hood diseases such as leukemia,
brain tumors and sickle-cell
disease," stated Kate Jankowski,
coordinator of the event, in a
press release.
"Through events like Trike-
A-Then, the Sedona community
can support the St. Jude mission
of finding cures and saving
children across the country and
around the world, This was our
first year putting on a Trike-A-
Then in Sedona, and we couldn't
have done it without the support
we received from our sponsprs
and particpants. We are very
grateful."
Plans for the 2011 Trike-A-
Then are already underway, and
a reminder will be given next
spring before the event.
According to the press release,
St. Jude Children's Research
Hospital is internationally
recognized for its pioneering
work in finding cures and saving
children with cancer and other
catastrophic diseases. St. Jude
is the first and only pediatric
cancer center to be designated as
a Comprehensive Cancer Center
by the National Cancer Institute.
Founded by late entertainer
Danny Thomas and based in
Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude freely
shares its discoveries with
never pay for treatment not
covered by insurance. No child
is ever denied treatment because
of the family's inability to pay.

Library hosts youth "
programs in June, July
"Combining Art with
Literature" workshops for
elementary school age youth
entering first through fifth grades
are being held this summer
during June and July beginning
Tuesday, June 1, at the Sedona
Public Library.
June classes will be lead by
Elizabeth Platte, a certified
elementary teacher who has
taught in Oak Creek School
District classrooms the past
three years as well as leading
arts and crafts classes at the
library in past summers. July
classes will be taught by local
painter and muralist Carol
Hildebrand. Hildebrand is also
an educator who has worked in
schools in Seattle and Arizona,
and has been an instructor with
the Artists-in-the-Classroom
program in local schools in the
Verde Valley, according to a
press release.
Preregistration is necessary,
and interested youth may sign
up in person or by calling the
library at 282-7714. The class
size is limited for all classes.
Each class will feature making
adifferent type of craft or art
activity. There is a $3 suggested
donation per class to help cover
expenses. These classes fill
up fast, so signing up early is
strongly advised.
Weekly sessions for children
entering second and third grades
next year will be held at 10 a.m.
each Tuesday, beginning June 1.
Weekly sessions for youth
entering fourth and fifth grades
next year will be held at 10
a.m. each Thursday, beginning
June 3.
Weekly sessions for children
entering first grade next year will
be held at 10 a.m. each Friday,
beginning 3une 4.
These arts and crafts classes
are just one program among
many others offered for youth in
conjunction with this summer's
Arizona reading program enti-
tled, "Make a Splash ... Read!"
A calendar listing these classes
as well as other programs and
workshops is available at the
library.
