Meals on Wheels
needs your help
This just in... Meals on Wheels
needs your help. We fall short on
delivery drivers and lunch servers
every summer. Call us if you can
help. Please help us continue to
meet the swelling demand for our
meal programs.
Well, it's Memorial Day
weekend. The unofficial start of
summer. What better way to ring
in the season than with a splash in
a pool?
The pool here at the Sedona
Community Center will be
opening Monday, May 31, at
10 a.m. We will be hosting a
poolside potluck party Saturday,
May 29, from 3 to 5 p.m.. This
is an opportunity to reestablish
friendships made last summer
and celebrate the success of our
preseason membership drive.
Not only did we have enough
members join in time to begin
the season on schedule, but many
donated additionhl dollars toward
our pool fund that will continue to
support ongoing maintenance. It
is clear that the pool is a resource
that this community values.
Even so, it is important to be
reminded as to how the pool fits
into the larger picture here at the
center. This property, land, building
and swimming pool was
deeded by the Harmony
Hills Recreational
Corporatio n to the Adult
Community Center of
Sedona in 1986. The
facility had previously
served as the neighbor-
hood clubhouse.
According to our
records, ACCS began Sedona
with approximately 60 Community
members. In the years
since, ACCS, now doing Center
business as the Sedona
Community Center, SUSAN
has grown in all ways.
Our membership now BARRINGTON
exceeds 400. We are "°"
proud of the diversity
of programming we
provide for our members rich,
Ongoing classes and workshops,
public seminars in health, finance,
law and safety, and an array of
activities serving a variety of
interests.
But even as we celebrate our
place as a community center "m this
way, we must remeniber thhfSCC
exists primarily as the provider
of social service programs which
support and protect the seniors in
our community.
And so, as I constantly remind
myself as we make important
decisions regarding governance,
fundraising, marketing, opera-
tions, programming and strategic
planning, the reason for all of our
work is the provision of service.
Therefore, everything we do
must be in support, philosophi-
cally and financially, of Meals
on Wheels, Community Lunch,
Breakfast Club, Telecare and
Transportation.
The cost of our social services
exceeds $250,000 each and
every year. We will gratefully be
receiving almost $140,000 from
the city of Sedona, and another
$30,000 to $40,000 annually from
other granting sources. The rest we
must make up through donations,

memberships, class and rental
fees, and of course, fundraising.
With this in mind, you might
understand that the costs of
running a swimming pool are
especially painful. Had this not
been part of the inheritance, a pool
would not have been included as
part of a viable business plan.
This summer, we are hoping
to minimize this annual loss of
revenue through new policies
and procedures. We hope to
balance the expectation
of members with our
need to manage ourselves
responsibly is service
providers.
We understand that
our lovely, heated, salt-
water swimming pool is
the reason many of our
members have chosen
to join the Sedona
Community Center. We
wish to make the use
of the pool inviting and
enjoyable.
SCC's social services
include home-delivered
Meals on Wheels deliv-
ered by a devoted fleet
of volunteer drivers.
This meal program also
includes our unique Breakfast
Club program at no cost. In addi-
tion to food, our volunteers deliver
compassion and respect.
Our Community Lunch is
served at the center Monday
through Friday at noon. This
program is made possible by
our generous, award-winning
kitchen staff and our civic-minded
Restaurant Partners. Guests are
greeted and served by volunteers.
The cost is $3 for seniors, $6 for
those under the age of 60.
, Our Telecare program provides
daily telephone calls to individ-
uals in need of a wellness check
seven days a week. This vital
service is available free-of-charge
to all Sedona-area residents
and is provided by concerned
volunteers.
