12A - RED ROCK NEWS, Sedona, Arizona Friday, May 28, 2010 SPORTS & RECREATION Sedona Community Pool opens this weekend By Brian Bergner Jr, LARSON NEWSPAPERS The weird hot, then cold, then hot, then cold again weather the Verde Valley has experienced lately isn't going to stop the Sedona Parks and Recreation Department from opening the Sedona Community Pool in West Sedona to the public Saturday, May 29. With school coming to a close, it's a perfect time for a little fun in the sun. Make sure to bring the sunscreen. The good news for swim fans out there is the Sedona Community Pool, which is near Posse Grounds Park, will be open until Sunday, Aug. 8. That gives everyone 10 weeks to come out and splash some water during free swim, take in a few laps, or join a water aerobics class. Either way, there's something for everyone at the Sedona Community Pool. 0ost First, we should immediately get out of the way what it actually costs to come swim this summer. Admission for children ages up to 2 is free, while children up to age 3 to 17 cost just $2 a visit. For adults, it's $3 a visit and for seniors 55 and over, it's $2. For a 30-visit children's pass [ages 3 to 17] it's $45, and for an adult 30-visit pass, it's only $75. Buying passes in bulk saves nearly 20 percent in'he long run, making it easier on room' and class such as swimming lessons. ' From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., individuals can swim laps during lunch while recreational swim- ming takes place from 1 to 4 p.m. No lap lanes are present and children must be accompanied by an adult. Finally, swim lessons take place from 5 to 6 p.m. in two, 30- minute sessions. On Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m. there is a masters swim which includes organized instruction on stroke techniques and for Tuesday through Thursday in the same time slot, aerobics and lap swim take place again. On Saturdays and Sundays during the summer, aerobics and lap swimming takes place from -9 to 11 a.m. and recreational swimming is from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On Fridays, the pool is closed to the public. More Information THE.SEDONA COMMUNITY POOL is scheduled to open Saturday, May 29, to the public. The Sedona Community Pool is located behind dad's wallets. For aerobics classes, it's $5 a visit or $40 for a 10-visit pass or $80 for a 20-visit pass. Masters swim is $5 daily. Group swim lessons are $35, which includes eight classes over a two-week period. Brian Bergner Jr. can be reached at 282-7795, ext. 131, or e-mail bbergner@ larsonnewspapers.com Women's 3.0 tennis team wins sectional title By Brian Bergner Jr. LARSON NEWSPAPERS The Sedona Sizzlers won four of five matches May 14 through 16 at the Southwest Section 3,0 Team Championships at the El Conquistador Resort in Tucson to claim the title. The Sizzlers, a Women's U.S. Tennis Association League team from Poco Diablo Resort in Sedona, played against other teams from Albuquerque, N.M., Phoenix, E1 Paso, Texas, and two teams from Tucson. The Sedona Sizzlers won the Southwest Sectional Team Championship after defeating Albuquerque 2-1; Phoenix 2- 1; one of the Tucson teams 2-1 and the El Paso Team 2-1. Their one loss came against the other Tucson team from Saddlebrook Country Club. With the Sedona team and the Tucson Saddlebrook teams tied with the same win-loss match record, Sedona won the team championship, having won more overall individual matches than the Tucson team. Sedona Sizzlers team members include Chri Bondurant of Clarkdale, Charlene Cullon of Cottonwood, Barbara Burch, Crystal Fraser, Maggie Hunt Marion Levine, Bonnie Pace and Kappy Losoff all of Sedona, and Lynne Navarro and Kandi Deavre of the Village of Oak Creek. Navarro and Bondurant went undefeated in four matches and Navarro won her fifth match playing with Maggie Hunt. Donna Roberts of Sedona was the non-playing team captain. "Every player contributed to winning the championship," Roberts said. "What is 'remarkable about this team is that only two players had ever had any .competitive experience before this season. Considering the team injuries and learning to deal with nerves, it was a terrific win, and being able to practice at Poco Diablo Resort was a big help to us," she added. In the USTA Men's 3.5 Sectional Team Championship played the same weekend, the Sedona Men's 3.5 team finished in second place with a 4-1 record. The tournament is one of the oldest of its kind in the country, featuring 13 doubles events where each team is composed of a family relationship of some kind. Competition will be held in the following events: father-son; father- daughter; mother-son; mother- daughter; brother-brother; brother- sister; parent-child [12 and undel;]; grandparent-grandchild; husband- wife open; husband-wife that are 45 and over and mixed relations [mixed doubles, any relationship]. "This is one of the best tournaments we host because all of the families are together on Father's Day and the attitude of the players is to compete but mainly to have fun," Sedona Racquet Club director oftermis Larry Lineberry said.
