It is one of the state's other nicknames that gave the title to one of the Sedona and Verde Valley's annual premier black-tie events -- the Copper Ball. This year is the eighth annual Copper Ball presented by the Verde Valley Medical Center. It is a chance for people to put on their best attire and enjoy an evening of dinner, music and dancing to benefit one of the many programs and services to address the health care needs of the community. The theme for the ball is "Copper and Crystal." It will be Saturday, June 5, at Tlaquepaque arts and crafts village in Sedona. It will benefit the Fit Kids of Arizona; a unique program that addresses one of the largest health care concerns facing the country -- childhood obesity. Developed by VVMC, Flagstaff Medical Center and Northern Arizona Healthcare, Fit Kids helps children and their families learn healthy lifestyle choices while reducing the problems and illnesses associated with excess weight. Fit Kids focuses on assessing and improving the possible causes through medical exami- nations, physical activity coun- seling, nutrition counseling and Foundation coordinator for the ball, said this year is expected to be one of the most memorable evenings yet. "We have the best bartenders in town and C.C. Jones Band will play for the dancing. They are from Phoenix and do a mix of Motown, Big Band and Frank Sinatra-type music -- the stuff that's great for dancing," Golden said. She has also been buying bright, copper pennies wher- ever she goes to use as table decorations. Flagstaff Media Relations director Starla Collins said the band played for an event she attended in Flagstaff and it was the first time she saw nobody leave the dance floor. "They're definitely crowd- pleasers," Collins said. The event will kick off with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., followed by an elegant, catered dinner served at the table. After dinner, it will be dancing and live and silent auctions, along with door prizes given out throughout the evening, A few chances for sponsorship are still available, Golden said. "We received such tremen- dous support when people heard the ball was going to benefit Fit Kids," Golden said about sponsors and donors. "We had trainers donate their time, we got memberships to fitness clubs and dancers donating lessons." Several individuals have donated personal art projects, event with dinner and dancing to benefit VVMC. The room was decorated in copper and black. Each year the Copper Ball committee chooses a VVMC program to receive the proceeds from the event.
