following a lengthy
illness. Her loving
husband, Raymond,
was by her side.
Jo Ann was born
on July 19. 1936 in
Woodbury County,
Sioux City, Iowa to
the late Dale M. and
Josephine M. Ard. 2;,
From a young age,
Jo Ann demonstrated a vivacious personality, and
singular sense of style. Her sense of humor, and
outgoing attitude often made her the belie of the
ball. With a sense of adventure, Jo Ann made the
move from Sioux City, Iowa to San Diego, California

life. They were married on June 20, 1964 in San
Diego, California.
Jo Ann was a loyal and loving daughter, sister,
wife, aunt, and friend. Over 30 years ago, Jo
Ann left a promising career with New York Life
Insurance Company to accompany Ray to Sedona,
Arizona to establish a family operated commercial
and residential painting business. Through all the
ups and downs of the intervening years, Jo Ann
remained a dedicated partner and motivating force
in their, personal and professional lives. Until her
final illness, Jo Ann continued as an active presence
within the community; the friendships she made
were life long. She made a lasting impression on all
who knew her and will be deeply missed and forever
remembered with love.

12 illegal immigrants arrested luneC°mputerboarddUbmeetingh'°lds
but smuggler flees into desert
On May 19, at approxi-
mately 12:30 p.m., a Yavapai
County Sheriff's Office deputy
conducted a traffic stop on
Interstate 17, milepost 260,
regarding a vehicle registra-
tion and equipment violation.
The vehicle involved was a
Nissan pickup truck with a fully
enclosed truck bed cover.
When the deputy contacted
the driver, he noticed six addi-
tional occupants crammed
inside the cab of the truck. The
driver indicated he did not speak
English well and was unlicensed.
None of the other occupants
acknowledged the presence of
the deputy.
The driver was questioned
• further while standing along-
side the sheriff's vehicle. He
identified himself as 21-year-
old Francisco Mateo-Sanchez
and indicated he was heading
to Flagstaff. Sanchez possessed
no paperwork to verify the given
name.
With another deputy present,
the handling deputy approached
the truck to check underneath
the bed cover for additional
passengers. As the deputy began
lifting the bed cover, the driver
suddenly darted across north-
bound lanes of I-17, continued
across southbound lanes, and
into the desert out of sight. An
assisting deputy was prevented
from chasing the driver due to
oncoming truck traffic. -
After lifting the bed cover,
deputies found six additional
passengers lying head to toe in
the truck's cargo bed. ,The cover
had been propped open with a
couple of bricks and had a belt
affixed to the opening mecha-
nism so the cover could be held
down.
Deputies contacted
Immigration and Customs
Enforcement Officers who
conducted phone interviews and
determined all the occupants
were illegal aliens and autho-
rized immigration holds.
All 12 subjects were detained
and transported to the Yavapai
County Detention Center in
Camp Verde pending transfer
to ICE custody. The vehicle
was impounded with intent
to file for law enforcement
seizure.
During a follow-up investiga-
tion, deputies learned that three
of the subjects were juveniles
and three subjects called Brazil
their home country, deciding
to enter the U.S. at the Mexico
border. The driver who fled was
not located.
