Cowboy up Sedona for blast from past The Sedona Main Street Program is preparing for Sedona's Celebration of National Day of the Cowboy, on Saturday, July 24. If you're wofidering why this particular day, a Senate resolution in 2005 was signed by then President George W. Bush to lesignate the fOurth Saturday of every July as National Day of the Cowboy. The first governor to grant a Cowboy Day proclamation and help build national stature for the day was Gov. Janet Napolitano of Arizona in 2006. Two years later, Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords [D-District 8] sponsored the Cowboy Day in the U.S. House of Representatives and Arizona again made Western history on June 19, 2008, when its Legislature became the first state-body to pass the National Day of the Cowboy resolution. What is there to celebrate? Well, ranching is an integral part of Sedona's history. Plus, the day was proclaimed to recognize the character and values of the cowboy, which embody honesty, integrity, courage, compassion, respect, patriotism and a strong work ethic. That seems like a great idea to me. In. past years we have had growing success with this new summer event. People from all over the state and foreign visitors on vacation come to Northern Serving Sedona SHIRLEY TOLLEY ee, Arizona to cool off and they visit Sedona to enjoy this cowboy celebration in a fabulous Western setting. Every year draws a bigger crowd having fun, spending time and money throughout Sedona. As you can well imagine, we are looking for businesses and organizations to sponsor the event. And community members are also needed to continue making the festivities successful. We need help from indi- viduals and organizations interested in coordinating and presenting event day activities such as country and western music, gun slinging and gunfight performances just like in the movies roping demonstrations, historical reenactments, cowboy artists, Old West craftsmen and cowboy trades demonstrations, even Western title book signings on a space available basis. Please contact us to participate in this celebration of our cultural heritage. Call 204-2390 or e-mail info@sedonamainstreet.com. You can also see photos from the 2009 event on our website at www. sedonamainstreet.com and just follow the link for Event Photos. We hope to hear from you soon.
