Twenty. Years Ago
March 9, 1990
Vol. 27, No. 46
Real estate sales figures in
January 1990 shattered the
January 1989 figure.
The January 1990 total of
$8,137,651 was almost double
the 1989 figure of $4,288,475.
Sedona real estate sales
figures for December 1989
reached $8,906,042, .pushing
1989 total dollar volume sales
to $98,256,146.
In December 1989, the
Coldwell Banker Residential
Group listed Sedona in a fore-
cast of the top 10 real estate
markets for 1990.
Real estate broker Nels
Peterson attributed the differ-
ence between the two January
figures to media reports of the
forecast.
According to Peterson, since
publication of the article the
"phones have come off the
wall."

There's plenty of intrigue
in Sedona enough so that
the City Council has approved
adding another detective to the
Sedona Police Department.
The new position, funded by
a grant, will increase the law
enforcement staff to 31.
The city has had one full-
time detective since November
1988.
"Cases continue to increase,
and the seriousness of the cases
is increasing," Police Chief
Bob Irish told the Sedona City
Council.
"It's important that we have
another detective full time.
Investigations are becoming
much more complex,"
City Council member Anita
MacFarlane said.
Mayor Ivan Finley said a
Yavapai County judge told him
the Verde Valley is "rampant
with drugs," with amphetamines
being the No. 1 issue.

WALTER "SONNY" JORDAN JR. and orchard truck are shown in the late 1940s. No one knows how
many miles the old Jordan truck traveled to Phoenix and other Arizona markets delivering Jordan family
fruit and vegetables. "Sonny" Jordan, son of Walter and Ruth Jordan, willingly admits to a lifelong love
affair with cars. Like most kids born and raised on a farm, the family's farm vehicles provided some of
his first experiences "behind the wheel."
Taffy to be groomed for his new
home. On the way, around 7:30
a.m., with the sun in the wind-
shield, Morgan was involved in
a collision near State Route 89A
and S, 12th Street. The impact
broke Taffy's carrier open and
the cat fled.
A distraught Morgan put an
ad in the Cottonwood Journal
Extra on Dec. 20 and many
friends looked for Taffy, but no
one found him. He was gone.
Then around 7 a.m. Friday,
March 2, Morgan's phone rang.
Julie Heitzman at Auto Fixation
on State Route 89A, a cat lover
herself, was on the other end
and said, "I think we found
your cat."
Morgan said she was afraid
Taffy had forgotten her, but
when he jumped on her lap and
began purring she knew there
still was a connection.
"He loves me. He didn't
forget me," she said. A faint
meow came through the tele-
phone line.

Everyone likes a happy
ending, and Virginia Morgan
just experienced one. Her cat,
Taffy, missing for three months,
has returned.
Morgan moved to Verde
Valley Manor and had taken
NAU choir, orchestr00t present Mozart masterpieces
musicians and organist
Elizabeth George, an NAU
faculty member.
The choir and orchestra will
present three lesser-known
sacred works by Mozart: Venite
Populi, Misericordias Domini,
and Sancta Maria, Mater Dei.
These elegant, engaging works,
composed while Mozart was in
his 20s and lived in Salzburg,
Austria, are not often performed.
They are tuneful and energetic
pieces that offer great insight
into Mozart's breadth of style
and compositional skill.
The program's fourth selec-
tion is Mozart's much-revered
Ave Verum Corpus, an undis-
puted treasure of the choral
repertoire, according to a press
release.
Hutton will open the program
with a lecture explaining the
style and context of these four
works. Performance of the
works will follow.
"We are very excited to
share these works with the
community," HuRon stated in
a press release. "Most of them
are rarely heard, which truly
is a shame. There are so many
gems in Mozart's sacred reper-
toire -- there's just no reason
not to perform them. I find that
audiences are eager and open-
minded, and we plan to give our
audience a superb performance
of these pieces."
The lecture-recital is free and
open to the public. The Church
of the Red Rocks is located at
54 Bowstring Drive, Sedona.

time he was playing some of the
hottest and biggest venues of the
Detroit metropolitian area.
His band at that time, The Killer
Flamingos, played the legendary

Hungry for travel and exposure
to different sounds and music,
Miller left Detroit in. the mid-
1990s to travel fo Europe where
he spent months busking on the
streets of France, Italy, London,
Ireland and eventually Spain.
It was there that he was seduced
by the art of flamenco. After

performed with such flamenco
greats as maestros Carlos Montoya
