at Phoenix tourney
By Brian Bergner Jr.
LARSON NEWSPAPERS
After a tough 7-6 loss to
Northwest Christian Academy,
the Sedona Red Rock High
School baseball team traveled
south to compete in the Phoenix
Country Day Invitational over
the weekend and rallied, finishing
with a 3-1 record.
Going 3-1 in Phoenix this past
weekend puts the Scorpions at 3-
3 overall on the season.
"This wasn't a bad tournament
for us. We saw a lot of good
things and I think we hit the ball
well. Our team batting average
certainly went up," first-year
Head Coach Rob Henry said.
In four games this past
weekend Sedona scored 45 runs
while allowing only 14, l0 of
which came in one game.
In game one Friday, March 5.
the Scorpions won a close won
with Valley Christian Academy,
4-3.
Junior Blake Barker took
the ball and went five innings,
allowing three runs on five hits
while striking out three in the
win.
Barker also hit a double in
the bottom of the sixth while
his team trailed 3-2 to get a rally
started, and sophomore catcher
J.R. Henry ended it for Valley
Christian when he hit a walk-off
two-run home run to win it, 4-3.
In game two later on Friday,
Mogollon High School was no
match for the Scorpions high
powered offensive attack as
Sedona took the victory, 20-0.
Senior Josh Dibiasi pitched
five innings of brilliant base-
ball. giving up only three hits
while striking out 10 batters and
walking three.
Dibiasi was in trouble here
and there, leaving seven total
Mogollon base runners stranded
in the 20-0 victory.
Junior shortstop Dylan Rose
was 3-4 with two RBIs and three
runs scored while junior Troy
Loparco was 2-3 with a three-run
home rtm in the top of the second
to help lead the Scorpions to a
seven-run inning.
On Saturday, March 6, Loparco
would take the mound and pitch
three strong innings, striking out
six and allowing only three hits
in an 18-1 victory over Chandler
Preparatory Academy.
Senior Pedro Ortega Jr. was
1-2 with a home run and was hit
by a pitch twice while Barker was
2-2 with a double and three RBIs.
Heading into their last game
of the tournament Saturday, the
Scorpions were primed to defeat
Parker High School, a 3A West
region rival whom they may see
come region tournament time.
Junior Tyler Hollmann took the
hill for the Scorpions but battled.
arm soreness early and wound up
pitching only 1 1/3 innings while
allowing two hits, two walks and
four rtms to score as Sedona lost,
10-2.
Sophomore standout Jack
Johnson took the hill in effort
to stop the bleeding but instead
threw gas on a fire, allowing five
rims on two hits and four walks
with two errors behind him in 2
2/3 innings pitched.
At the plate, Sedona got its
only two runs off a solo shot in
the second from Loparco and an
RBI single from Henry in the
third.
• Speaking of home runs, the
Scorpions have now hit five
home runs this season, matching
their 2009 total already only six
games in.
Sedona is hitting .384 as a team
at the plate this season, something
Henry is proud of.
"We didn't start out great but
we are now finding our stride
and being only six games into
our schedule, we have plenty of
time to do some great things this
year," Henry said.
Next up for the Scorpions,
Sedona will play host to Chino
Valley High School on Thursday,
March 11.
First pitch is scheduled for
3 p.m.

TRACK AND FIELD coach Harry/Schneider talks with his team during practice at Sedona Red Rock High School on March 3.
Scorpion track ready to shine
By Brian Bergner Jr.
LARSON NEWSPAPERS
The Sedona Red Rock High
School track and field team
is primed and ready for a big
20,10 season and according to
longtime Head Coach Harry
Schneider, it could be one for
the books.
"We fully expect to break 20
school records this season and
both our boys and girls teams
should not only challenge for
the region thi s year, but for state
as well," Schneider said.
The Scorpions have already
shown everyone their mighty
sword thiS spring after traveling
to Flagstaff on March 2 and
taking first overall on the boys
and girls side at the Skydome
Classic on the campus of
Northern Arizona University.
"Some of the top teams in the
state were there and we took first
on both sides. It was a good way
to start this season," Schneider
said.
The 2010 version of a track
and field team here in Sedona
will look to dethrone Blue Ridge
High School, the 3A confer-
ence defending state champion,
come state championship time
in May.
For now however. Schneider
and his Scorpions will be
looking to find out what holes
need to be plugged and where to
set the athletes up for the long
haul.
Top Returners
For the boys, senior Kevin
Cox leads the way and should be
a top sprinter and long jumper
this spring.
Senior Garrett Debs will be a
1600 and 3200-meter top partic-
ipant this year while running the
4x400 meter relay as well.
Senior James DeVore is the
top pole vaulter this season .for
the Scorpions and should be
the favorite going into region
this season while senior Zach
Saxman is the top thrower in
2010 and has already surpassed
his 2009 totals.
Senior Tristan Whitaker will
rtm hurdles this year and senior
Jesus Rivera will be one of the
top distance, relay and sprint
runners in all of Arizona.
Others .returning for the boys
include A.J. Garnello in the
shot put and Michael Lamb
in the triple jump. Sophomore
Christ Oestmann should be a top
hurdler this year and sophomore
Jorge Rivera could be a top
distance man in 2010.
For the girls, senior Rita
Clancy returns looking to win a
hurdles title while fellow senior
teammate Stephanie Mcllroy
competes alongside her in the
hurdles and does the triple
jump,
Lydia Mosley returns for her
senior season looking to be in
top form for the half mile runs
this year and could participate in
a few relays as well.
Sticking with the mile runs.
senior Sophia Zeno will be the
top contender this year in the
1600 and 3200-meter races.
Other top returners for girls
include junior Hope Goimarac
and sophomore Naomi Mosley
in the shot put.
Top Newcomers
A few top newcomers this year
for the boys include sophomores
Dylan Barnes and Allen Myers
with freshman Walker Eaton.
Barnes will compete in the
high jump this season while
Myers will do, his thing in the
half mile competition. It is
unknown which events Eaton
will compete in yet.
For the girls, four freshmen
who could be the future of
the program have caught
Schneider's eye.
Mykala Seresun, Eva Wilson,
Rachel Lillie and Tiana Hatler-
Stefick have all shown promise
in the early going•
Seresnn will already be a top
two-mile contender this year at
the varsity level while Wilson
will be right behind her in
distance runs as well.
Lillie is a 4x800 meter relay
athlete and Hatler-Stefick has
shown her stuff at shot put,
recently taking third at NAU
just last week.
Overview
The Scorpions look to be not
only one of the top 3A West
region teams this season, but a
tOl 3A team in state this year.
With 50-plus student-athletes
out for track this season, a
number that seems to be the
norm for this program in the last
five years, it should be a great
season.
Look for the Scorpion boys
and girls to win the 3A West title
this season and finish in the top
three at state,, if not win it all.
