RED ROCK NEWS, Sedona, Arizona Wednesday, March 10, 2010 - 11A The coming summer is no reason to diet, eating is too enjoyable Hello, readers. Summer is coming. Well, not right away, but for those of you who want to look good in a bathing suit it is time to think about it. Time to diet? Not me. I enjoy eating more than I'd ever enjoy being slim again. Here's how I feel about losing weight. Nobody loses weight. That sounds like you misplaced it and now can't find it. You wrote something down and put the slip of paper somewhere and now it's gone. That's lost • You set something on top of the car while getting the kids in, and aider you drove away it fell off. That's lost. Lost sounds like you don't know what happened to it and you want it back. Folks, we know what happened to that weight, don't we? And we don't want it back• We worked hard to get rid of it. We sweated. We had aching muscles. We deprived ourselves of second helpings and desserts, We skipped the butter on our popcorn and the doughnuts at the office. We spent hours reading calorie counts and fat grams on food labels. We pretended to enjoy exercising, Oh, I'm sure GOVE someone out there ell really does enjoy exer- c, ising, but that's ,only one person and I've never met Cooking With Mary Ann MARY ANN her or him. We read all the dieting tips like the one where they tell you that after a few weeks of cutting out sugar, you no longer crave it. We know that's baloney, don't we? The one about lemon juice sprinkled on your salad tastes as good as ranch dressing? Baloney. The one about how four or five small meals a day will keep you from being hungry? More baloney. These tips were all fabricated by a ll0- pound woman who was born without taste buds or hunger pangs. A woman who could slip on a bright red dress and go to a Halloween party as a thermometer. Now, I could pray to suddenly lose my appetite. I could pray to suddenly enjoy spending two hours a day on the treadmill and the exercise bike. The truth is, I enjoy eating and will probably die with a chocolate covered cherry in my hand. And, while I do exer- cise from time to time, I'm not consistent. I'll never be on a first-name basis with my treadmill. I do have one wish, however. I hope the next time I see that gal in the red dress, she's a size 16. Today's recipe is one I was given years ago by a friend. It's a nice sweet vanilla cake which needs no frosting. Vanilla Cake r • 4 eggs B 2 cups sugar " It 2M cups flour ' • 2M teaspoons baking powder • 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract • 1V4 cups m k I 10 tablespoons butter Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, using a rotary beater or electric mixer, beat eggs y add sugar and beat'unt I fluffy. powder, and vanilla, and beat at OW speed unti The recipe states it serves 16. Yeah, right. It' s never too early to teach children good health habits Have you ever wished you could go back in time, correct your mistakes and change your life? Well, you can't for yourself but you can for your children. A healthy lifestyle and diet are not only for adults. In this country today, we have an epidemic of obesity, inactivity and poor health choices. Most of our health problems start in our youth. This is why it is never too early to teach and to learn good health habits. When your doctor recommends a low fat, high fiber diet, this advice is good for your whole family, not just you. Families should work as a unit toward better health, including diet modification, exercise and curtailing unhealthy habits. Example: If you smoke, you are posing a danger to your children as well as setting a bad example. If you look in the mirror and don't like what you see, you may be looking at your son or daughter 20 years from now. So change it! Put me out of business.
