[ Ir ........... rllrl Bashas' fate in limbo By Michael Maresh LARSON NEWSPAPERS The future of the grocery store chain Bashas' and its store in Sedona is still in limbo, and it likely will not be decided until next month at the earliest. While one grocery chain main- tains it is in the negotiation stages to purchase Bashas', execu- tives of Bashas' disagree. Both chains admit Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons Food and Drug Center offered to purchase Bashas' stores, including the one that has been in Sedona for decades. Bashas' spokesman Robert Johnson said Albertsons officials sent Bashas' Chairman Eddie Basha a letter in February with an offer to buy the company for $260 million to $290 million• Johnson said the offer was not cash on hand, and added Bashas' quickly rejected the offer• Complicating the process is that Chandler-based Bashes' has filed for bankruptcy organization, and Johnson said what happens will be decided by the court. If the Bashas' chain were to sell to another company, creditors would likely receive the money owed to them sooner. Albertsons spokeswoman Christine Wilcox, speaking from Boise, called the offer generous, but added the Bashas' family has yet to respond to the offer. She declined to comment on what the merger would mean to the smaller Bashes' stores, like the one in Sedona, ifAlbertsons did acquire the chain. "It's far too soon to speculate," she said. "We simply want the opportunity to see what the two businesses will look like." Wilcox said Bashas' acknowl- edged it had received Albertsons' proposal and its plans if the merger were to happen. Johnson, though, said Albertsons knows Bashes' stance on the offer, which was not solic- ited or asked for in any way. "The gist is the CEO [of Albertsons] sent an offer to us in February, and we read it and declined it," he said• He said the letter detailing the offer later surfaced somehow and was publicized in media outlets after the offer had been rejected. He acknowledged the company did review Albertsons' offer. Johnson said Bashas' is now concentrating on its Tuesday, April 6, bankruptcy reorganiza- tion date before Bankruptcy Judge James Marlar. "We submitted a plan with us paying off our creditors within five years," he said. He' added Bashes' has been around for 78 years, and plans on continuing the business for many more years. Preaching the Good News for 50 years The Church of the Red Rocks marks golden anniversary By Lu Stitt LARSON NEWSPAPERS Sedona's Church x)f the Red Rocks is celebrating two anni- versaries in 2010. The church is having its Golden Jubilee and the Rev. George Ault is marking his silver anniversary as the church's pastor. "By June, I'll have been here longer than any other pastor. I get a set of steak knives," Ault said and laughed as he and church members John Moore and Judith Glenn conducted a tour of the church recently. In 1960, 20 Sedonans estab- lished The Church of the Red Rocks. About half of them came from Wayside Chapel. "Only two of the original 20 are still here. Ann Jackson was a Jordan and she came with her husband, Bob, and Patty Fox is still very active," Moore said. The congregation will cele- brate its 50th anniversary with concerts, special events and speakers throughout the year. "All of our anniversary events will be free to the public as a gift to Sedona," Moore said. As part of the celebrations, the church commissioned a Jubilee Quilt from nationally- known quilter Eunice Hill. It was dedicated Dee. 6 and hangs in the large meeting hall. In the center is a depigtion of the wooden cross that adorns the altar in the sanctuary. "Someone found that piece of wood while hiking on this property. It's been here nearly as long as the church," Moore said. The first full-time pastor, Rev. Paul Babbitt, challenged the congregation with, "It is an awesome thing to build a JUBILEE CHAIRWOMAN JUDY GLENN, left, and Church of the Red Rocks Pastor Dr. George Ault are planning events throughout the church, but let us expect great things from God." Construction began in December 1963. In the early 1970s the Rev. Perry Avery led the groul and encouraged them to "live with their diversities in love." From 1973 until 1983, the Rev; Alice Snow began her ministry during which the congregation grew to nearly 500 members. The congregation today has more than 500 members, a church with a sanctuary, meeting rooms, offices and a large kitchen on top of a hill overlooking Oak Creek. "Since Rev. Ault has been here we've seen our community outreach increase, our programs expanded and a long-range plan Tom Hood/Larson Ngwspapers year celebrating the church's BOth anniversary in Sedona. Ault is also celebrating 25 years at the church's pulpit. for our future," Glenn said. The Church of the Red Rocks built a music program through support and a venue for many artists. "Our church has always been a great supporter of the arts," Glenn said. Continuing to grow, the church dedicated a new Life Long Learning and Leadership Center in 2008. Ault's anniversary will be honored at a Sunday of Appreciation in June. His path to the ministry began through a church camp program. Ault first served as an intern to the Rev. Roy Grazier for one year, while he finished seminary. An officia with the Northern Arizona Intergovernmental Public Transit Authority says the Verde Lynxbus service in Cottonwood and Sedona wasnever intended to lessen congestion on local streets and highways. By Michael Maresh LARSON NEWSPAPERS The success of the Verde Lynx has been called into question by residents seeing the bus running with almost no one onboard. Jeff Meibeck, general manager of the Northern Arizona Intergovernmental Public Transportation Authority said the bus never was intended to lessen the congestion on Sedona or Cottonwood streets. He said the reason for the eight trips per day is for people needing to get back and forth, and added it makes little sense to not have return trips for people needing to get back home, regardless of the ridership levels. He said even if the bus ran at full capacity with 23 riders it would not decrease congestion in any way. Jim Wagner, senior manager operations for NAIPTA, said ridership for February was the most it ever had with 1,607 passengers, though a round-trip counts as two trips. Meibeck said there certainly are going to be times when the buses have very few passengers, but added the service still needs to available. "Clearly, sometimes the buses are not full," he said. The most common afternoon trip on the Verde Lynx is the 4 to 5:15 p.m. trip with 318 riders for the month of February, most who are returning from work. Wagner said the busiest times are in the mornings with 513 riders taking the shuttle between Please see BUSES, 13A WEATHER .
