She said Sedona is facing the same challenges as the rest of the cities and towns in the state. She added taking control of State Route 89A would be almost impossible because of the cost. "We are talking about a $20- million project, and I don't know where that would come from," she said. Scagnelli added transporta- tion impacts everything, and when Interstate 17 shuts down, tourism drops in the city. She also said the jury is still out on the work done on State Route 179 and there were widening improvements on State Route 260. She said businesses and indus- tries wonder how their goodsare .going to be delivered. Jeffrey Siet Siet, a licensed contractor and owner of his own company, said he is running for a seat to give residents an impartial voice. "I would like to have greener construction in Sedona," he said. In his closing remarks, Siet spoke about his qualifications, saying he knows the ins and outs of the business because he is a businessman. He owns a land- scaping company. Siet said tourism is the way Sedona will prosper, and as a council member, would encourage the city to work with the chamber of commerce and Sedona Main Street Program to promote what Sedona offers. Dan Mcllroy Mcllroy said his sole reason for running is he wants to repre- sent citizens of Sedona. He said he would listen to the public and not support any special-interest groups. He also said the city needs to spend within its means, explaining the city spent $1.4 million more than what was brought in last year. He urged the public to vote for his "running mates" because he cannot do it alone. "We will get your city back in balance and tell you the truth," he said. Mcllroy, a retired prosecutor, said visitors come to Sedona because the city is unique, so the reason they come must be SEDONA RESIDENTS listen to Sedona City Council candidates speak of Women Voters on Feb. 3 at the Sedona Public Library. protected. He added if people keep coming back because the unique- ness does not change, the result is more money for the city. He also thinks the residents should not have their sewer bills sufsidized by sales tax the city receives. * He told audience members they should vote for retired candidates over those having jobs because they have more time to study issues. Mike Ward Ward, who considers himself a volunteer junkie, said campaigning is the difficult part of the election process, but he knows he would do a good job. "I feel a sense of place and community [in Sedona] more than any place I have ever lived," he said. "I believe I can work with anyone." He also said he will listen to the public to get its input as part of the decision-making process. Ward said what the city should do is reinforce the zoning Ordi- nances" already in place and not give in to developers. He said the affordable housing issue is a regional issue. He said the time the city spent on accessory dwelling units could have been used more wisely and mentioned a home registry. He thinks homeowners not living in their residence would rent them for less money rather than have than hav.e them sit vacant with no money coming in. .Barbara Litrell Litrell move to the Verde Valley in 2002 before settling in Sedona in 2008. She said ever since moving to Arizona, she has been involved in organizations such as Keep Sedona Beautiful, of which she once was president. "I would like to bring a fresh perspective to the council," Litrell said and added she wants to listen to the public and follow what it wants. She said Sedona is a magnet for the rest of the Verde Valley, mentioning tourists may visit other locations after spending time in Sedona.
