DANIELLE MILLER Impresses the audience and the judges with a

Sunrise Superstar roster for this week
Twenty contestants took the stage at the Sedona Creative
Life Center on Jan. 6 for the first of four Sedona Sunrise
Superstars shows, but only 15 will return this week. The
event, styled after the popular television show "American Idol,"
i$ a vocal competition whose proceeds will go toward funding
the Sedona Sunrise Center for Adults, a brand new organization
which offers day care services for the elderly. The four judges,
Sammy Davis, Shondra Jepperson, Jim Buchanan and Jeannie
Carroll, Wbre honest and generally encouraging in their evalu-
ations of each singer but host Pat Schweiss did root around in
Carroll's hair at one point looking for horns.
From show tunes to alternative rock, the contestants took
the audience on a musical roller coaster ride and left them not
knowing what to expect next. Highlights included West Sedona
School's physical education teacher David Hoover's rendi-
tion of Glen Campbell's "Rhinestone Cowboy," Toni Munoz's
rendition of"O Mio Babbino Care" from an unfinished Puccini
opera which garnered the only standing ovation of the evening
from the audience, as well as Peri DiDonato's love song to
.her husband, "I've known him since 15," said the diminutive
DiDonato.
The contestants will continue to be whittled down every
Wednesday until the grand finale on Jan. 27, at the Sedona
Creative Life Center. Come early to get a good seat and
prepared to be blown away by Sedona's secret talents. Returning
to perform tonight are: Ed Tortor llo, Jacquie Forschia,
Courtney Grieco, Shauna McCoy, Brittany Smith, Cindy Cole,
Daniell Miller, J.J. Corcoran, David Hoover, Run Harrington,
Levi Chambers, Michael Teeple, Adore Blake, Toni Munoz and
Sophia Harness.
