The adage, "If you don't use
it, "you lose it" is the reason
the 10 people in the Bone &
Balance exercise class keep
coming back.
"I'd be dead ifI didn't do this
class," George Lauman said. He
will be 95 years old in June, and
has no'need for assistance to get
where he wants to go, like a cane
or walker. "I started in 2003. I
needed some exercise, and in
45 minutes here every joint in
your body gets worked. To do
that you have to have muscles.

We build them up here."
The only time Lauman misses
the twice-weekly class is during
the summer when he visits
family in British Columbia,
Canada, and Montana. He
doesn't feel right if he misses,
he said.
Lauman does plan to buy a
cane, but one like Fred Astaire
used in the 1935 movie "Top
Hat."
"I can use it for show," he
said, twirling his hand as if he
had a cane in it.
Suzanne Collins attends the
class to stave off the effects of
osteoporosis. It helps strengthen
her joints and the muscles that
support them.
"I love to hike, and this class
helps keep me aetive " the 78-
. year-old CollLns said as she
lifted her leg to point her toes
and release to work the front of
the ankle joint.
Bone & Balance is a gentle,
45-minute workout done mostly
from a sitting position. It is
designed to help strengthen the
muscles around the joints and
keep them working. Participants
use their own weight along with
light hand weights and a flex
tube with handles to provide
extra resistance, according to
instructor Cindy Matoon.
Throughout the class at the
Sedona Community Center,
Matoon often reminds the
participants to sit up straight
and maintain good posture and
not slump forward. In fact,
many of her moves finish by
having them roll their shoulders
back.
One of the exercises was to
sit upright and twist to the side
and look behind.
"You have to move like this
when you back up your car, so
you need to keep the obliques
strong," Matoon told the class
as she demonstrated the move.
The obliques are the muscles on

the side of the abdomen.
Toward the end. Matoon had
everyone stand up and sit down
just using their leg muscles.
Stepping to their side of the
chair each person rose up on
their toes and back doyen several
times. None lost their balance
nor reached for the chair.

chair. Practicing helps. Plus it
strengthens the leg muscles,"
she said. "An extra benefit they
get is increased flexibility and
easier breathing."
Bone & Balance is 2ust 'one
of the many classes offered at
the community center to help
people become and stay strong
and healthy. The class meets
twice a week, on Wednesday
and Friday at 10:15 a.m The
community center is located
at 2615 Melody Lane in West
Sedona. For information, call
282-2834.
"It's so much fun to see
them stay flexible and strong,"
Matoon,said. "It's one of the
best things I do."
After the class many of the
participants stayed for lunch.
